Festive cheer will soon be coming to Colchester in the shape of a series of new late night shopping events.

Our Colchester Business Improvement District and InColchester, groups which support businesses across the town centre, have unveiled their Christmas plans.

This year’s high street light switch-on will once again be a virtual event with a video released to mark the occasion.

However, bosses have been confidently saying the new late night shopping events “will be delivering more than any previous light switch-on.”

Across three Wednesdays in December there will be live music, magicians, entertainment, carol singers and market stalls.

Shops across the entire town centre will remain open late and there will be free parking too in all council car parks from 3pm each day.

A North Pole Post Office will be set up in Culver Square to enable little ones (and bigger ones) to send a personal postcard and wish-list to Santa himself.

People will also be able to donate a gift for someone less fortunate at the Foodbank Giving Tree.

There will also be an interactive photobooth for the best ‘Elfie’ and a free gift wrapping service in town every Wednesday and Saturday.

Little ones can also enjoy a Christmas-themed treasure hunt...

Santa’s sleigh is also due to make an appearance in the town centre on December 15.

Sam Good, BID manager, said: “We understand some residents will be disappointed there will not be a traditional High Street light switch-on.

“However, as an alternative, across our late Wednesdays from 3pm onwards we will be delivering more than any previous light switch-on.

“There will be opportunities for visitors to watch live performances, children to take part in activities, a raft of food and drink stalls that visitors can enjoy.

“With most of us missing out on seeing loved ones last Christmas, we want to offer our residents and visitors the opportunity to make up for lost time.

“We, along with town centre partners, are putting on more activities than ever before.”

The late night Wednesday events take place on December 8, 15 and 22.
