AS the winter air starts to pinch our cheeks, is there anything more heart-warming than a delicious cake, a traditional bacon sarnie, or a comforting cuppa?

We've rounded up some of the best rated coffee shops and cafes across Colchester which you can cosily enjoy as the chiller months creep in.

So, here are the town’s top spots according to TripAdvisor:

Caffe Scala

Located in Eld Lane, this British coffee and tea house boasts more than 100 Excellent reviews and 36 Very Good ratings from customers.

One guest described it as: “A fabulous cafe with great coffee and lunches. We will definitely be going here again and often. The staff are amazing and the salads to die for.”

Tea At The George
Described as being “something special”, this quaint café is situated next to the George Hotel in the High Street and is a thing of beauty and guests agree.

An impressive 30 of the 33 ratings it has received so far have fallen either in the Excellent or Very Good categories.

In a review on TripAdvisor a customer said: “The Afternoon Tea was amazing as well as the atmosphere and service.

“Everything tasted so lovely, the vanilla tea was really subtle and water came in a quirky tea pot, each one different for each table which was a lovely touch - highly recommended.”

Culver Street Baristas
One of the more well known coffee spots in Colchester, Culver Street Baristas, has been said to have “the best coffee in town”.

Boasting a plethora of Excellent ratings it is also famed for its ‘latte art’ and the meticulous way customers’ orders are presented with nothing but care and attention.

“Culver Street Baristas Coffee Bar is a hidden gem in Colchester, wonderful service from Porto who is a Barista Extraordinaire, said one delighted customer.

“You would need to travel far to find such barista skills, and exceptional coffee.”

Coastal Coffee
Although not in the heart of Colchester, this Mersea Island café is as popular as ever, with 75 Excellent or Very Good ratings.

Specialising in British cuisine and serving up dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Coastal Coffee makes for a very decent all-round destination – not least thanks to its location.

One recent customer said: “Lovely food, by far the best breakfast we had on our holidays. Really lovely service and setting too.”

H Gunton

Another highly-rated social spot in Colchester is H Gunton, with 29 of its 32 reviews being either Excellent or Very Good.

The café is appreciated by customers thanks to its traditional approach to serving up British staples and also selling products, such as coffee beans.

One extremely satisfied guest said: “Despite living in Colchester for almost 25 years, this was my first time in this store, looking for coffee beans.

“A very wide selection served by pleasant and knowledgeable staff.

“It may have been my first visit but it will not be the last that's for sure, very happy to support this local business, it's everything the local deli should be.”

Other cafés which made the top ten include The Coffee House, Oak Tree Coffee House, Maple Tree Tea Rooms, Maison Mollie, and Star Light Tearooms.
