Youtubers The Sidemen are understood to have been filming at Charter Hall.
The group, a collective of YouTubers and musicians with more than 13 million followers, visited the town on Monday night.
Fans took to social media after spotting the stars including rapper KSI at Charter Hall and McDonalds in Cowdray Avenue.
Videos on Twitter show crowds of people rushing to a car carrying some of the members of the group at the drive-thru.
Colchester Council has now confirmed the group hired Charter Hall for filming purposes.
It is not known what was filmed or when it will be available to view.

The group is made up of internet personalities KSI, Miniminter, Zerkaa, TBJZL, Behzinga, Vikkstar123 and W2S.
The stars have grown their following with videos on challenges, sketches and video game commentaries.
Since 2014, the group has sold and distributed Sidemen Clothing merchandise.
Fans had taken to social media to ask why the group had been in Colchester.
One said: “@Sidemen come on spill the beans why were you in colchester today.”
Another said: “Why were the sidemen at Colchester today, my mate bumped into them!”
