Following the incident the A12 was closed in both directions while officers investigated and firefighters worked to rescue those trapped in the car.

As a result traffic came to a standstill for hours before the police were eventually forced to turn vehicles around in a bid to ease congestion.

The southbound side was eventually re-opened at about 5.20pm while the northbound carriageway remained shut for a further three hours.
