TOWN centre bars have introduced foil covers for drinks in addition to a host of other safety measures to prevent offenders from spiking punters.

Walkabout, in Head Street, and The Centurion, in North Hill, Colchester, have acquired StopTopps, which bar-goers can request are placed on the top of their drinks.

The versatile anti-spiking devices are designed to deter drink spikers and can be used on a majority of glasses, bottles and cans commonly found in pubs and clubs.

The bars are also increasing on-the-door searches, re-briefing staff and security on protection policies, and assigning a dedicated worker who bar-goers can approach for help if they feel unwell.

They said: “Given everything going on right now we're doing our utmost to make sure our customers feel safe in our venue.

“With that in mind we've introduced foil covers that fit any of our drinks, increased searching on entry and re-briefed all staff and security on protections policies.

Gazette:

“A designated member of staff will also be wearing a yellow luminous armband over Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

“You can approach them at any time with any concern you have or if you are feeling unwell - your safety is a priority and we aim to prove that with these measures.”
