On 24th September 1991, arguably, one of the most influential albums ever was released. Grace Capel explores the influences and changes caused by Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’.
How can one album influence millions of people’s opinions, style and even inspire other bands creation! It does sound impossible but Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ proves just how powerful one band can be. On the 24th September 1991 they released Nevermind, which continues to influence people’s lives to this day.
Many bands would actually not be around without the genius of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. One popular band who would not have been formed without Nevermind is Weezer.
Rivers Cuomo speaks about the release of Nevermind: “At first, I thought ‘This is too polished and commercial.’ It was a little off-putting. But then I was like, ‘This is the best music ever!’ It felt so close to what I wanted to do. I believed, ‘This is something I can do.’”
So, without Nevermind’s release, on the Valentine’s Day of 1992, Weezer would not have been formed.
In addition to this, Kurt Cobain openly supported the LGBTQIA+ community and proudly declared himself as a feminist. In fact, the song ‘Polly’ is about a 14 year old girl who outwitted her kidnapper by pretending that she liked him. The song acknowledges that men do abuse and violate women, however, they are also strong enough to overcome whatever they are going through. The members were even seen to wear dresses and other stereotypically female clothing.
That’s it then, clearly one album and band can influence millions of people across several generations and will continue to!
