A FORMER Philip Morant School and Colchester Royal Grammar School student who gained a degree from one of the UK’s most prestigious universities has appeared on national television to share her research on climate change.

Alice Edney, who went on to study at Cambridge University, featured as part ITV’s Joanna Lumley and the Human Swan programme.

Miss Edney is now studying for a PhD at the University of Oxford, where she is writing a thesis on the effects of global warming on sea birds.

Aired on Monday evening, Joanna Lumley and the Human Swan featured a segment where Miss Edney discussed the reasons why sea bird populations are decreasing due to climate change.

Speaking to Joanna Lumley and Sacha Dench, an Australian conservationist, she said: “If there are high winds or bad weather, it can disturb the surface waters and make it hard [for sea birds] to see the fish and catch them.

“[The warming ocean] can have quite bad impacts on sand eels when the chicks need them the most, which is really upsetting.

“With any species, they deserve a place on the planet and you don’t know what could happen if you remove them from the food chain. It could have really negative impacts for other species.”
