AN Olympic champion will help a supermarket chain open a brand new store in Colchester which will create a raft of jobs for residents.

Aldi is gearing up to unveil a shop on the Stane Retail Park, in Stanway, later this month, replacing its existing store in London Road.

The £60 million complex is already home to B&Q and an M&S Foodhall is slated to be launched as part of the major development in early 2022.

Run by manager Karl Mitchell, the supermarket will boast a team of 35 workers who have all been sourced from the local community.

After officially launching, the low-priced store will continue to create further employment opportunities for those living in the area.

The new store will be opened following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 18, which is being led by Olympic gold medallist and BMX star Bethany Shriever.

The young Finchingfield resident, like other Team GB members, has been greatly assisted and helped by Aldi, who act as an official sponsor.

Bethany added: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store, it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB.”

As has come to be expected with Aldi stores, the latest addition to the chain’s roster will offer affordable food and drink products and its famous ‘middle-aisle’ items.

In a further step to establish itself within the community the new shop will also be calling on charities and food banks in Colchester to register with Neighbourly.

The engagement platform links businesses to non-profit organisations which can then benefit from surplus food such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods.

Aldi’s store manager Karl Mitchell said he is excited to get to work.

He added: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Colchester.

“It’s set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Bethany Shriever join us will make it a morning to remember.”
