FORMER Colchester United favourite John-Joe O'Toole has signed for their League Two rivals Mansfield Town on a short-term deal.

The ex-U's midfielder, who played 76 times for the club during a four-year spell at the JobServe Community Stadium between 2009 and 2013, has signed a deal with the Stags until January.

O'Toole has made more than 400 career league appearances for the likes of Watford, Sheffield United, Bristol Rovers and Burton Albion, during the course of his career.

The 33-year-old won promotion to League One with Northampton Town in 2016, where he was named in the PFA Team of the Year for a second season.

Mansfield manager Nigel Clough told the club's website: “John-Joe is a player we know well from our time at Burton.

“He is experienced and can play in different positions.

“He is competitive, aggressive at times, and good in the air, which is something we also need.

“With us currently being low on playing personnel through injuries, it’s ideal for both us and him to joins us till January and see how it goes.”
