A TEENAGER who stabbed a stranger in Colchester told the police he was "born with no regrets".

Tyler Menzies, 18, said he had “started smiling” after stabbing a 63-year-old man in Crouch Street, Colchester, just before 1.30am on Sunday, May 23.

The victim had left a nightclub with a friend and while walking to a kebab shop across the road had been singing loudly.

A group nearby then approached them, starting a verbal argument about their singing.

During the argument Menzies, of Walsingham Road, Colchester, drew a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest.

He was treated in hospital and received stitches.

While waiting for medical assistance, the victim provided officers with a description of the suspect.

Officers driving past St Mary’s car park noticed a man matching the description leaving the car park fire exit and arrested him within 19 minutes of the initial incident.

Officers searching the area found the knife used discarded in the multi-storey car park.

Menzies admitted the charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon at Ipswich Crown Court in June.

When asked by officers if he felt any remorse, he stated “I genuinely don’t feel sorry”.

Yesterday, at the same court, he was sentenced to four years and four months in prison with a further five on license.

Investigating officer DC Tim Harris of Colchester CID said: “Menzies has shown a complete lack of remorse throughout the investigation. At one point during questioning, he said that he had been looking to stab or rob someone.

“Although the victim was thankfully not seriously hurt, he was left understandably traumatised by the attack and left wondering why anybody would carry a knife ‘just because’.

“Nobody should fear being hurt on a night out with their friends.”
