THESE images provide an exclusive glimpse into a new film that gives former students a chance to revisit special memories of the Gilberd School in Colchester.

The film was created after former teacher Eddie Ross shared a series of photos celebrating his time at the school, on the website, Eddie’s Gilberd School Photos.

This provoked a huge amount of interest.

Mr Ross, who taught at the school between 1966 and 1985, leads the virtual guided tour. During his time there, the school was located on North Hill - today the location of the Colchester Sixth Form College.

Jonathan Moran, who helps to run the website, said: “Eddie’s Gilberd School Photos provoked a huge amount of interest from past pupils around the world.

“We began to realise that there were many people out there who would probably never have the chance to re-visit their old school or attend one of Eddie’s tours.

“The next best thing was to record a virtual tour so that anyone who wants to come back can do so, regardless of where they are.”

He added: “We were very grateful to the sixth form college for allowing us film on the campus and while we were there we wanted to try to match up four photos that were taken on the site in the 1920s.

“At the time the site was shared by the Technical College and the Girls County High School.

“Fortunately, we were able to match each photo fairly closely, so we can now compare these images which were taken approximately 100 years apart.”

Mr Ross’s stories and recollections of people and events help to bring the old school to life.

One particular photo shows the 1920s gym and pupils hanging off the wall bars on the left hand side with eye level windows covered, possibly to prevent any passers by from observing the women while they were exercising.
