The number of Covid cases in Colchester increased by 453 over the weekend, official figures show.

It means a total of 21,210 people have tested positive for the virus in Colchester since the pandemic began in 2020.

As a result, the rate of infection in the borough now stands at 10,756 cases per 100,000 people, lower than the national average of 12,322.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded over the weekend.

In total, 398 people have died after testing positive for Covid in Colchester.

It means there have been no deaths in the past week. There was one death the week before.

Statistics also reveal nearly three-quarters of people in Colchester have received two doses of a Covid vaccine.

The latest figures show 130,133 people had received both jabs by Sunday, totalling 72 per cent of those aged 12 and over in the borough.

In the Tendring district, the number of Covid cases increased by 234 over the weekend.

It means a total of 15,998 people have tested positive for the virus in the district since the pandemic began.

As a result, the rate of infection in Tendring now stands at 10,857 cases per 100,000 people.

There was also one more coronavirus death recorded over the weekend.

In total, 600 people have died in the area having tested positive for Covid.

The figures also show four in five people in Tendring have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.
