A SCHEME to get part of Colchester moving has been launched after a councillor called on residents to keep fit and boost their mental health through exercise.

Colchester councillor Dave Harris is hoping the town will be ready to get on two wheels after allocating £2,000 towards funding the fitness boost.

The Get Monkwick Moving campaign saw free Dr Bike sessions available to residents where they were able to receive repairs and general health checks to their two-wheeled transport.

A bike ride and walk also took place to familiarise people with the best route from Monkwick into Colchester’s town centre, while also helping them meet other potential budding cyclists.

A repeat of this event will take place tomorrow for those who missed it.

For those lacking confidence while on two wheels, free learn to ride sessions will be taking place on Tuesday for adults new to cycling or returning after a long time, with a children’s session on Monday.

Mr Harris said it was a worthwhile scheme to get involved with and hopes it will help to boost people’s general wellbeing.

“I felt, with the pandemic, people have got to find a way to get healthier and fitter and the way to do this is to get out in the fresh air,” he said.

“It’s good for your physical and mental health and the route into town is a careful one away from any main roads.

“Monkwick is blessed with this great cycle route, it’s a really nice ride with trees and bushes all the way.

“It’s just two-and-a-half miles to town and it’s going to keep people fitter, tackle obesity and give them the confidence to get out and about.

“If anything, it’s a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your family if you all head out together.

“Why use your car when you can get to the town centre in ten minutes on a bike?

“When I come back from my bike rides, I get a hell of an appetite for it because I really enjoy it, I wonder why I don’t do it more often.

“I now want to properly encourage people to get out there and get that same amazing feeling you get after exercise and fresh air.”
