COLCHESTER United assistant manager Alex Dyer felt they thoroughly deserved their point at Swindon Town.

The U's played out a goal-less draw at the County Ground, to maintain their unbeaten away record in League Two.

Dyer, who took the team with academy boss Dave Huzzey in the absence of head coach Hayden Mullins who was absent due to Covid, said he was pleased with Colchester's performance.

Dyer said: “It’s a great point for the club.

“We could have had all three, because we created a lot of chances especially in the first half but we’re happy with the point.

“First half was an even game and we both had chances.

“We were better than them in the first half and we dug in, in the end and worked hard.

“Swindon are the home team and they’re going to press us – we were counter attacking in the second half but we still created one or two.

“It was quite comfortable and our shape was good – the lads enjoyed the point.

“For an away team, I thought we created a few chances.

“I can remember Frank (Nouble) having a couple, Freddie (Sears) and (Alan) Judgey too.

"Our shape was good and we'd worked hard on it all week.

"We worked hard when we were out of possession and what we needed to do.

"Sometimes, even without the ball you can control the game, which we did so we're happy with the performance."

Both Colchester and Swindon had chances to win the game in the closing stages.

Charlie Daniels was denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott, while Ipswich Town loanee Tyreece Simpson wastefully headed wide from a good position for Swindon, late on.

“It would have been unfair (had Tyreece Simpson scored a late winner)," said Dyer.

“It would have been unfair on the two centre-halves, because they played him well.

“It just shows you that you need to concentrate 100 per cent in all the game.

“They deserved that bit of luck and good fortune.

“We work hard – we’ve just got to put it right at home which we will do.

“But away from home we’re quite comfortable and every man knows what they’re doing.

“I said that to them afterwards – they worked hard for each other and we got the right result."

Colchester goalkeeper Shamal George was again in impressive form for his side, making a number of fine stops.

Dyer said: "Since I've been at this club, he's pulled off some great saves and won us games."
