ROAD safety experts reported more than 90 drivers for speeding on one stretch of road in Colchester.

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership helped carry out speed checks around the town yesterday.

In one instance a driver was caught travelling at 55mph in Langenhoe.

The team also spent time in Tollgate and reported 92 drivers for speeding offences on one road.

In a Tweet they said: "#tolgate [sic] 92 drivers reported that's one speeding motorist every 45 seconds on this stretch of road #VisionZero."

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) launched its Vision Zero draft strategy last week.

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) brings together Essex County Council, Southend Council and Thurrock Council to provide a road safety service.

It also works alongside Essex Police, Essex Fire and Rescue Service, Highways England, The Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust, The East of England NHS Trust and The Safer Roads Foundation.

The partnership’s purpose is to reduce death and serious injury on Essex roads to zero.

It promotes road safety and casualty reduction through a number of activities, interventions, programmes and products.

There were 42 deaths and 675 serious injuries recorded in 2020 on Essex's roads.

Will Newman, Head of Prevention at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “While considerable success was made in reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries recorded on the roads of Essex between 2005 and 2020, there were still 42 deaths and 675 serious injuries recorded in 2020.

“This is too many deaths and injuries and the partnership has adopted an ambitious target to achieve ZERO deaths and serious injuries by 2040. In addition, an interim target of reducing deaths and serious injuries by 50% has also been adopted by 2030.

“We cannot achieve these targets alone and we need the support of all residents, businesses and road users."
