THE heartbroken cousin of a young man who tragically died following a town centre stabbing has thanked a seaside community for showing support.

Harry Burkett, 21, of Grays, died after suffering a fatal stab wound in Orwell Road, Clacton, shortly after midnight on September 12.

Since his untimely death everything from heartfelt cards and balloons to beautiful bouquets of flowers have been placed outside the Coral betting shop.

Thousands of pounds have also been raised for Harry’s funeral and a special send-off following donations from hordes of people touched by his death.

Harry’s devastated cousin Chelsey Thwaites, of Clacton, has now shown her appreciation for the way in which residents have supported her family.

She said: “I will always miss you, Harry.

“I would like to thank the Clacton community, which has laid down flowers, balloons, cards, tea lights, gifts, and given money.

“I live here in Clacton, so it means a lot to me.

“I want to also say a thank you to all of the shops which have been so supportive - especially thank you to Quality Diner.”

Chelsey has also expressed a hope to commemorate Harry’s life with a town centre memorial.

She added: “I will now be trying to get a plaque on the wall or a lamp post.

“It will be to remember Harry.”

Harry, described as a “fun character”, sustained the stab wound after visiting Clacton to enjoy a night of clubbing with a friend.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics to save his life at the scene, he later died in hospital.

A 16-year-old boy, of Clacton, has since been charged with murder and appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday.

A pre-trial hearing will be held on November 22 ahead of the trial on February 7, 2022.
