MORE than 27,800 youngsters across the county took part in a free summer activity programme during the summer holidays.

Health body Active Essex worked with more than 100 organisations to run the biggest holiday activities and food programme to date.

More than 200 Essex ActivAte clubs across the county staged 180 different types of activity from team sports to yoga, martial arts, pony rides, crafts, music, coding and exploring nature.

Former professional football player and Active Essex board member Anton Ferdinand said: “It’s great that we’re targeting children as it’s giving them the foundation to a happy and healthier life.

"As people we aren’t born to stand about, we’re born to be active, and this programme encourages people to stay active mentally and physically.”

The Active Essex team are now turning their focus to the October half term and Christmas holidays.
