COLCHESTER United promotion hero Neil Danns has a new club - at the age of 38.

Midfield ace Danns, who played his part in helping the U's achieve a historic promotion in 2006, has signed for non-league Macclesfield FC on a non-contract basis.

Danns – who has been capped by Guyana - made a total of 85 league and cup appearances for Colchester, after joining them from Blackburn Rovers in December 2004, initially on loan.

The former Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers favourite – who left Welsh side Connah’s Quay Nomads this summer – had a trial spell with League Two Oldham Athletic before joining the reformed Macclesfield.

“I’m over the moon,” Danns told the club’s YouTube channel.

“I think everyone’s aware of the number of fans that have been coming to recent games.

“As soon as you see something like that, and especially at my age, that’s what it becomes about. The buzz of the fans, that is what gets me going.

“I had a couple of offers to play a little bit higher but I just knew I wouldn’t get that same buzz, so this seemed like the perfect relationship.

“I still do have my own standards. I probably can’t get to them as much as I used to be able to, but I think there is still enough there to have an impact.

"So, I’m just looking forward to helping out.”

Macclesfield are currently top of the North West Counties Premier Division.

They have picked up 17 points from their opening seven matches.
