A CARE home has received a glowing review after health regulators carried out an inspection of its services.

Cleaveland Lodge, in Rowhedge Road, Old Heath, provides accommodation and personal care for up to 54 older people, some of whom may be living with dementia.

Being judged whether its service was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, the care home returned a good rating in all categories.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission praised improvements which had been made since the home’s previous report, where the provider had worked to “embed improvements at the service”.

Having spoken with people at the home, the report said residents told how they were happy living there and had the support they needed.

One resident added: “I have everything I need.”

The report underlined the care and treatment were planned and delivered in a way which was intended to ensure people’s safety and welfare.

Furthermore, people were cared for safely by staff who had been recruited after appropriate checks had been completed and had received the correct training.

Measures were also in place to minimise the risk of viruses spreading through infection.

Further praise was given for the provider’s encouragement for residents to have maximum choice and control of their lives, noting the staff supported them in the “least restrictive way possible”.

Policies and systems in place helped to enable this philosophy.

Residents were supported to eat and drink enough to ensure they maintained a balanced diet, and referrals to other health professionals were made when required.

People and their relatives were involved in the planning and review of their care, while they were supported to follow their interests and participate in social activities.

The registered manager was praised for responding to complaints in a “timely manner” and for being successful in driving improvements at the service.

Systems had also been put in place to monitor the service and improve outcomes for people.

Overall, it was noted in the report the environment was “well maintained and suitable” for all living there.
