A SWIMMER was carried off a town’s beach on a stretcher after jumping into shallow water and injuring their neck.

Holbrook Coastguard Team was called to Dovercourt Bay beach at 2.30pm on Tuesday to assist Walton Coastguard Rescue Team with the care and extraction of the injured person.

The casualty was being treated for abrasions to the face, as well as a possible neck injury following an accident jumping into shallow water.

Once off the beach they were taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment.

A spokesman for Holbrook Coastguard said: “This incident highlights the dangers of jumping into water of unknown depth – especially in tidal areas.

“Strong tides can change the depth of water very quickly and cause injuries if jumped into. We always advise against jumping from any height into our rivers and seas.”
