Asked about the high street plans 30 per cent strongly agreed and 28 per cent agreed with the proposals.

A further 14 per cent were neutral, nine per cent disagreed and 18 per cent said they strongly disagreed.

Responses to the questions about the high street received 256 positive comments and 199 negative comments.

The report said: "Respondents were broadly supportive of the measure with 58% in agreement vs 27% opposed.

"Those in support mostly highlighted a reduction in pollution and the opportunity for improving the ambience of the High Street.

"Another common response was the desire to see the proposals go further, with some respondents feeling that the exemptions and time-limited restrictions allowed for too many vehicles and made it difficult to enforce.

"Those that opposed the proposals, did so predominantly because of concerns about the impact on traffic.

"However, a number felt that the restrictions being too lenient added to the problem, and that the High Street should be completely vehicle free."

Essex County Council will make a final decision based on the responses.
