A BUSY road connecting Colchester to Tendring is set to be closed as part of five weeks of roadworks.

Highways bosses are preparing to update traffic lights at the junction of Colchester Road and Brightlingsea road just outside Wivenhoe.

Works are expected to begin on Monday October 4 and will take about five weeks to complete.

During the first week an overnight road closure will be required on Brightlingsea Road to allow for work to take place across the carriageway.

The road will be closed between the hours of 7pm to 5am with a ten mile diversion in place.

A diversion will be via Brightlingsea Road, Broad Lanes, St Osyth Road, Tenpenny Hill, Clacton Road, Station Road, Frating Road, School Lane, Great Bentley Road, Main Road,Frating Hill, Colchester Road, Clacton Road and vice versa.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “We will be replacing the traffic signals at the junction before they become unreliable and fail to work properly and will be installing new extra low voltage equipment which will help reduce our carbon footprint.

“During the first week an overnight road closure will be required on Brightlingsea Road to allow for work to take place across the carriageway. The road will be closed between the hours of 7pm to 5am.

“From the week commencing Monday October 11 the works will be carried out during the day with lane restrictions in place managed by three-way temporary traffic signals to provide a safe working area while operatives are on site.”
