COLCHESTER United have signed former Spurs youngster Chay Cooper.

The 19-year-old, who can operate on either flank or as a central midfield player, has landed a deal with the U's after spending pre-season with them.

He is expected to start off with academy manager Dave Huzzey's under-23 squad, at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Cooper, who was one of a number of under-23 players released by Spurs at the end of last season, netted goals in Colchester's under-23 friendlies at Brantham, Bury Town and Stowmarket.

The teenager attended Mark Hall Academy in Harlow, where he was a 200m and 800m champion at county level.

Cooper played for Southend United at schoolboy level from the age of ten before joining Tottenham towards the end of the 2016/17 season as an under-15.

He returned to Southend on a short-term basis last season to get game time with the under 23s.

Cooper had impressed for the Shrimpers in his youth before being snapped up by Spurs where he signed as a scholar.
