FURTHER damage has been identified to a crumbling section of quayside in Colchester.

Colchester Council appointed Breheny civil Engineering to investigate works needed to repair a section of Fieldgate Quay, where the piling has begun to detach from the river bank.

Further movement has been identified in the piling over the last few weeks, with another section of sheet piling also showing signs of movement further along the quay.

The nearby footpath, which links Hythe and Rowhedge, has remained closed for months in the interests of safety.

Simon Crew, councillor responsible for environment and sustainability, said: "Given the nature of the full repairs needed, this work was never going to be a simple quick fix.

"However, it is a positive next step to have Breheny onsite from next week to complete the final survey works required.

“We are continuing to monitor the damaged section of piling closely to ensure the continued security and safety of the area."

Colchester Council says it is working with CTruk Marine Services, which is located nearby, to ensure the business can operate safely.

Once investigative works are complete, the council be able to set out what repairs are needed and when these will take place.

However, due to the complex nature of the works and the various statutory permissions needed, re-piling at the site is unlikely to start until the autumn.

As the River Colne is internationally important for wildlife, the council is in consultation with several statutory organisations and an environmental consultant is involved to minimise the impact to the surrounding biodiversity.

Colchester Council said there is no concern about Anglian Water's outlet pipe in the area.

The council is continuing to look at long-term options for regeneration, environmental and public realm improvements to the quayside, working with residents, businesses and other interested groups.
