DONATIONS are continuing to flood in for the heartbroken family of a young boy who died after suffering devastating injuries in Colchester's Fenwick.

More than £4,200 has been raised in just two days to support the grieving family after the five-year-old boy sustained a serious head injury at the Colchester High Street store last week.

The fundraising page was launched by Colchester Community Group which has more than 30,000 members.

Alice Simpson, one of the members who set up the page, said: "Following the sad death of a five-year-old boy after an accident in Fenwick’s department store, it became apparent that the community wanted a way to support the family in this most difficult time.

"The admin team of Colchester Community Group therefore decided to set up a GoFundMe fundraiser with the mother’s permission with the money raised to go to the family for them to spend as they wish.

"Since the fundraiser was launched, on the evening of Tuesday, it has exceeded £4,000 - far beyond any amount we could have imagined raising.

"The response from the local community has been truly astounding.

"The group is almost six years old, and in that time, we have seen time and again how supportive the Colchester community is of one another, and this fundraiser is a testament to this.

"Our thoughts remain with the family, and while we know that nothing will bring their precious boy back or ease their pain, we hope the money raised will help in some small way.

"The fundraiser will remain open until Tuesday evening to give everyone a chance to donate if they wish to."

Emergency services scrambled to Fenwick shortly after 11.30am last Tuesday after reports of concerns for the welfare of a child.

When they arrived, they found a boy had suffered a serious head injury.

It is understood a mirror fell on the boy while he was inside the store.

First aid was administered by emergency workers, but he had to be airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge.

After fighting for his life in hospital for days, Essex Police confirmed the youngster had died on Tuesday.

Colchester Council is investigating the circumstances surrounding the boy's tragic injury.
