NEARLY two-thirds of Colcestrians have received both doses of a coronavirus vaccine, figures reveal.

The latest figures show 108,008 people had received both jabs by Wednesday – 65 per cent of those aged 18 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 73 per cent of people aged 18 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Dr Ed Garratt, chief executive of the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System, said: “It’s great to read today’s latest figures which show that three quarters of our local adult population has received both doses of vaccine.”

However, the number of Covid cases in Colchester increased by 75 in the latest 24 hour period.

A total of 15,452 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Colchester when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated today, up from 15,377 on Wednesday.

The rate of infection in Colchester now stands at 7,836 cases per 100,000 people, lower than the England average of 9,240.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Colchester.

The dashboard shows 379 people had died in the area by today – which was unchanged from Wednesday.

It means there has been one death in the past week, which is an increase on none the previous week.

They were among 13,526 deaths recorded across the East of England.
