Drivers face a week of overnight disruption as road repairs are carried out at a busy roundabout.

Work to create a new road surface, repaint road markings and clean drains will close sections of the Greenstead Roundabout in Colchester for five nights.

Sections of the five mini-roundabouts which make up the roundabout on the A133 in will be closed at night between Monday August 16 and Saturday August 21.

While one route around the roundabouts will be closed, another will be open to keep traffic moving.

But drivers have been warned there may be some delays.

Highways bosses say the decision was taken for overnight works due to how busy the route is.

A spokesman said: "Greenstead Roundabout is a key intersection in Colchester, with the main route to and from the east on Clingoe Hill meeting routes north and south and the through route to the west on the A133 St Andrews Avenue.

"Essex Highways feels the balance of nuisance to residents versus traffic disruption has tipped in favour of night working, with noisiest work on the roundabout to take place before 11pm."

Councillor Lee Scott, the council's highways boss, said: “Our ability to close whole sections here is limited because it is such a vital, busy junction, so when we can close it we want to carry out several types of work at the same time.

"The main work here is to repair sections of the road surface, removing the existing worn and damaged surface and laying new asphalt.

“We will also re-paint white lines, clean and jet the road drains, replace bollards and chevron signs and repair lit signs. Not only will this be safer and better-looking, it will future-proof the busy roundabout for years to come.”

Essex Highways says motorists should allow extra time for night-time journeys in the area, and asked drivers to drive slowly near any roadworks.
