We have taken a look at some of the best hotels in and around Colchester, according to TriAdvisor.

Now that Freedom Day has been and gone, it might be a good time to enjoy a mini break closer to home or have friends and family to visit. 

The following hotels have been selected based on their reviews on TripAdvisor and received the most four to five star reviews.

Prested Hall Hotel, Feering

Securing itself a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award 2021, the hotel sits among 75 acres of parkland and is partly surrounded by a moat.

On TripAdvisor it says the owners 'have attempted to create a place of quality, where comfort, style and relaxation exist without cold formality.' 

It has recieved 639 'excellent' reviews on the website. 

One recent review said: "The room was really nice with a comfy bed and powerful shower. The bathroom was huge! We had a meal in the restaurant which was good.

"Staff were helpful and friendly. We enjoyed sitting in one of the tiny lounges, with a glass of wine before our tea. Breakfast was delicious, great choice to order the night before."

Wivenhoe House

Also a winner of the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award 2021, the hotel sits in 'breath-taking grounds and picturesque countryside'. 

The TripAdvisor description says it offers 'luxury bedrooms' and 'incredible balcony rooms'. 

It has 623 'excellent reviews' on the website.

A recent review said: "We stayed in one of the Contemporary Garden rooms with a balcony and we were very happy with the room.

"It was so quiet even though it was above the Brassiere. The views across the gardens and parkland were so calming.

"We didn’t plan on eating there each night but after the first meal we did. The food was excellent and the service and care was incredible."

GreyFriars, Colchester

The hotel also scooped a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award 2021. 

GreyFriars has '26 luxuriously appointed bedrooms' which the owners say are 'fitted to match 5* standards'. 

It also boasts marble bathrooms or shower rooms.

It has recieved 238 'excellent' reviews. 

One review said: " Great looking hotel, good sized room, well decorated, lots of extras, had large umbrella, clothes brush, mini bar with fresh milk, couple of beers (small wine for the ladies may have been nice, bottled water and a couple of soft drinks.

"Had cocktails on the patio one evening, nice and relaxing. Had Netflix on the t.v which have never had in a hotel before, very welcomed. If in the area again would definitely return."

Colchester Boutique Hotel

The hotel also secured a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award 2021. 

All the bedrooms at the hotel have private bathrooms, telephones, tea and coffee, Wifi, towels and slippers.

It has recieved 218 'excellent' reviews on TripAdvisor. 

A recent review said: "Stayed at the hotel for a night and will definitely stay here each time we visit Colchester. Location is perfect for a walk through town, and free parking helps ;-)

"Breakfast was delicious and the room superb (let’s face it, Colchester is an ancient city, and the room was a quaint combination of vintage and modern)."

The North Hill Hotel, Colchester

The hotel's description on TripAdvisor says it aims to 'provide a convenient and friendly place to stay in the heart of the old Roman Capital city.' 

It has received 185 'excellent' reviews. 

One review said: "Wonderful hotel and fabulous restaurant. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Rooms exceptionally clean and of a high standard.

"The Green room restaurant was great. We had breakfasts and dinner there great value for money all round. Beautiful presented and super produce."
