THE multi-million pound revamp of Colchester’s old Co-op department store has moved one step closer to completion, with the new modern apartments now available for let.

A total of 24 one and two-bed apartments have been created as part of the East of England Co-op’s £5.5 million development, in Long Wyre Street, Colchester.

The completed revamp will also feature two retail and five restaurant units, whilst two of the homes will be available at affordable rents as part of a partnership with Colchester Borough Homes.

Nick Denny, joint chief executive at the East of England Co-op, said: “We’re delighted to announce that all 24 apartments at Foundation House, within our Long Wyre Street development, are complete.

“Our vision for Long Wyre Street is to create a thriving town centre location where our communities can live, work and socialise.

“With these flats now available to let and café-bar-restaurant Romano Lounge set to open soon we’re excited to see this vision coming to life.”

Romano Lounge, which will be operated by Loungers, will offer all-day dining with space outside for al fresco eating and drinking outside.

The area surrounding the development is set to undergo a major revamp as part of plans to create a new public square.

The proposals for St Nicholas Square will see a new one-way system introduced for traffic with space for bars and restaurants to have tables outside and an area for hosting events.

National café, bar and restaurant operators Loungers, known for brands Lounge and Cosy Club, are the anchor tenants at the Co-op development.

Mr Denny added: “As a locally based Co-op we’re pleased to be working with several local contractors and professional advisors on the Long Wyre Street redevelopment.

“Our contractors, Rose Builders, have done a great job of transforming our 60,000 sq ft site.

“They have finished the apartments to a high standard whilst navigating guidelines and restrictions throughout the pandemic.”

The homes range from studio flats to two-bedroom apartments and are all fitted with modern kitchens and bathrooms.

A selection of the apartments also have private balconies and views across the historic town centre.

The development has been named Foundation House after the foundation stone which has been preserved and will remain at the site.
