LIFEBOAT volunteers were tasked with rescuing people reportedly stuck in mud.

While most of the nation were celebrating England's monumental win against Denmark in the Euros, West Mersea RNLI volunteers were called to rescue three people stuck in mud between Coopers' Beach and Waldegraves.

Before arriving on scene on Wednesday night all three people had been safely rescued by West Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team and the lifeboat was stood down and returned to station.

A West Mersea Coastguard Rescue spokesman said: "Tasked at 10pm (during extra time) to three people stuck, lost and partly cut off by the tide between Essex Outdoors Mersea and Coopers Beach Holiday Park.

"All three rescued safely with the help of South Woodham Coastguard Rescue Team and Essex Police .

"This area is hazardous with a partly collapsed and breached sea wall.

"Even more hazardous at night.

"Please only walk here at low water, or just avoid it altogether."

An RNLI spokesman said: "It isn't just the football we want to see come home, please be very careful around the coast of Mersea and the whole country.

"Carry a means of calling for help with you at all times and avoid the coastline at night.

"Always dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard if you or anyone you see is in trouble near or on the water."
