A HOMEOWNER has praised a green scheme after a “frightening” fire hazard was removed from her property.

Elizabeth Sadler, 75, who lives in Tendring, had loft insulation which was deemed unsafe by professionals.

Having applied for Essex Council’s Green Home Grants scheme, Mrs Sadler’s property, which was built in the 1970s, was inspected by Aran Insulation.

During this inspection, the surveyor found her loft insulation was paper-based, meaning not only did it fall below current Government standards, it was also highly flammable.

The retired radiographer said: “It was frightening to hear my loft insulation didn’t comply with any fire regulations and posed a real risk to my safety.”

Less than two weeks later, contractors arrived at her home to replace the dangerous insulation, taking less than a day to complete.

Mrs Sadler added: “I’m so relieved my home now has a reduced fire risk. I would strongly urge people who feel they fit the scheme’s criteria to pick up the phone and call Aran Insulation.

“Like myself, many others may be living in a dangerous home and not even realise it.”

The works also boosted her house’s energy efficiency, meaning it is more friendly for the environment as the new insulation will see less heat escape.

“I have particularly noticed the difference when it was cooler a couple of weeks ago,” Mrs Sadler added.

“My upstairs rooms were so warm as the heat wasn’t escaping through the gaps in the loft like it used to.”

Peter Schwier, of Essex Council’s Climate Action, said: “I hope this story will encourage more residents to check their eligibility and consider applying for the scheme.

“The works are fully funded, meaning they cost nothing to the homeowner, and all it takes is a quick phone call to start the application process.”
