The Maldon Road attraction ranks at number six in the top ten zoos across the country, according to research by Parkdean Resorts.

A spokesman for Parkdean Resorts said: “To find the top zoos we looked at BIAZA zoos to ensure that the zoos on our list are focused on creating a safe and fun environment for animals and visitors alike.”

BIAZA is the professional body representing the best zoos and aquariums in the UK and Ireland.

She added: "With restrictions now lifting and zoos finally able to open once again, Parkdean Resorts have created a ranking of UK zoos, based on entry fee, TripAdvisor reviews and range of animals on offer to discover which UK zoo is on top - and Colchester Zoo ranks at number six.

"Families across the UK will rejoice in being able to visit much loved zoos once again, therefore Parkdean have created this list of specifically BIAZA zoos to show which are worth a day trip.

"Not only that, but zoos are expected to welcome us back with open arms, as shockingly, 49 per cent of zoos had to resort to crowdfunding in order to keep operating during lockdown."

The top rated zoo was Tilgate Nature Centre in West Sussex.
