RESIDENTS are being urged to make memories close to home this summer by enjoying the attractions and beauty of Essex.

A new campaign has been launched encouraging people to discover the gems right here on our doorsteps.

It is being organised by Visit Essex, which is part of Essex County Council.

It is working with visitor attractions, leisure, activity and accommodation providers to promote the county as a leading place to shop, eat, drink and visit, both for tourists and residents.

Gazette:

Cllr Graham Butland, Essex County Council’s cabinet member for devolution, art, heritage and culture, said: "We’ve all enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family recently and being able to safely create new memories.

"Essex has lots of open space and attractions for people to spend time together and appreciate what our great county has to offer.

"As restrictions ease, we’re encouraging people to explore what’s on their doorstep – from the well-known attractions to the hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

"Not only might you discover something new, you will also be supporting local businesses after what has been a difficult year for many.

Gazette:

"These businesses have worked incredibly hard to adapt to the current circumstances and are ready to welcome you back safely.”

Essex boasts 350 miles of coastline.

There are the better-known, family-friendly and fun-filled seaside resorts of Clacton and Southend, including Adventure Island theme park, plus sandy beaches and quieter destinations of Frinton and Walton.

All these locations boast scenic beach hut backdrops, cafés and takeaway.

Gazette:

Essex also has an incredible tradition of seafood.

Originally cultivated by the Romans, the Colchester native oyster is still harvested off Mersea Island today.

Head to West Mersea for some of England’s best fresh sea food, or to go crabbing from the jetty.

Relish an exhaustive variety of culinary pleasures – from scrumptious food on the go to lavish dining at award-winning restaurants and one of the many vineyards.

Combine a trip to one of our town centres or outlet centres like Braintree Village or Lakeside with a mouth-watering meal, the ideal way to treat the kids this summer, or to catch-up with friends.

There are also attractions like zoos, farms and castles in Essex.

Gazette:

From animal encounters at Colchester Zoo to farms like Old MacDonald's Farm, as well as wildlife sanctuaries, areas of natural beauty, wildlife walks and parks, there’s something for all the animal-lovers in the family.

Step back in time and soak up the atmosphere at some of our heritage attractions, from the striking buildings and gardens at Audley End and Layer Marney Tower to the castles at Colchester and Hedingham.
