Officers did, however, have to close the road from the Maldon Road roundabout for at least two hours so vehicle could be safely removed.

One woman was reported for careless driving following the crash, which is believed to have occurred near the road’s traffic lights and multi-storey car park.

Colchester resident Fred Brown, who noticed the police presence, said: “I did not see the crash but the road was closed until the vehicle was recovered.

“There was no other cars there but there is a massive pothole in the middle of the crossing which is a danger to pedestrians and may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

“The safety crash barriers have now also been removed and dumped."
