HAYDEN Mullins says Colchester United are still hoping to bring in 'a number of players' ahead of the new season.

The U's made a double signing on Thursday with the capture of Luke Chambers and Luke Hannant from Ipswich Town and Cambridge United respectively.

They joined Cole Skuse in joining Colchester this summer, following the midfielder's switch from Ipswich last month.

A host of players left the U's at the end of last season, as new boss Mullins shapes his squad for the 2021-22 campaign,

And while the Colchester head coach is delighted with the business they have done so far, he is hopeful that there is much more to come with the U's recently linked with moves for the likes of Alan Judge, Abu Ogogo and Freddie Sears.

Mullins told Col U TV: "It's shaping up OK at the moment.

"There's still a number of players we want to get in and we're looking at.

"But with the lads we've got in so far, it's been a great window for us at the moment.

"Hopefully, in the next coming days we can bring some more news and some players we're talking to and we can keep building."

Colchester completed the signings of defender Chambers and winger Hannant both on two-year deals, this week.

Chambers, 35, arrives after a nine-year stint with Ipswich, while Hannant has joined the U's just weeks after helping Cambridge secure League Two promotion.

"They're two key signings," added Mullins.

Gazette:

"Luke is vastly experienced; he's a good player, still fit and plays a lot of games which is important.

"We looked into his background and him as a character and as a player and like Skuse, Chambers brings the same - he's a leader and captain at Ipswich for a number of years.

"So absolutely delighted to secure him; he was a player we'd been chasing and it had been well documented.

"He's a player we feel will add a lot of experience, a lot of quality and also for the younger lads, someone to definitely learn from and benefit.

Gazette:

"Luke Hannant is a quality player.

"He's won promotion with Cambridge and I think was one of their outstanding players this season, along with Wes Hoolahan and their goalscorer (Paul) Mullin.

"I thought he brought a lot to their team and again, I speak about the characters again - we want to fill our dressing room with a lot of good characters.

"He's a good character - a good player, hard working player, plays games and he'll bring a lot of quality and experience to our team."
