SHIN pads at the ready - we're lacing up our football boots for another dose of school nostalgia.

To get us in the mood for the European Championships, which get underway on Friday, these pictures have been shared by former Gilberd School student-turned-teacher Roger Springett.

The 66-year-old joined the school, then on North Hill, Colchester, as a student in 1966 (coincidentally, the year England famously won the World Cup) before leaving in 1973.

He then became a teacher at his old school and recently retired after 38 years.

Mr Springett dropped us a line to share photos reflecting on some of the school's main football highlights over the last 50 years.

He said: "I had had the pleasure of teaching and coaching many talented players over the years, many of whom left the school to start professional careers in the sport, notably Paul Abrahams, who played for Colchester United from 1992 until 1999, and Alex Gilbey, who was at the U's from 2012 until 2016 and now plays for Charlton Athletic.

"Many more left the school to become scholarship players, mostly at Colchester.

"Some of my pictures are from 1973, when I played in the Gilberd team that won the Earls Colne six-a-side competition. We were coached by John McAleavey.

"Other highlights, as a teacher, included having Alex in our team when we were crowned Year 11 area champions in 2011.

"We were also Year 9 area champions in 2012, again winning the final at the Community Stadium, and back in 2010, our very talented team won the Essex Schools Under-16 Championship.

"Coached by Steve Elliott, we beat St Bonaventure's School 6-1 in the final at West Ham."

Mr Springett also has fond memories of the Gilberd playing at Wembley, in 1998.

The school represented Colchester prior to the U's Third Division play-off final against Torquay United.

The team included key stage three students and the game went to a penalty shoot-out.

Fifteen year prior to that, in 1983, the Gilberd's Year 8 and 9 squads enjoyed a tour of Belgium.

"We won both our games so remain unbeaten in Europe," joked Mr Springett.
