A FESTIVAL’S founder has said she is excited for this year’s event as it enters its 27th year entertaining young people.

The Young Children’s Festival will take place next Saturday, albeit on a slightly different platform.

It will take place live on Facebook from 10.30am until 4pm following six months of rigorous planning amid the uncertainty of Covid-19.

But the founder of the volunteer-led festival, Harriet Miller, 69, said the event will be “a box of online delights”.

She said: “While, of course, it’s disappointing not to be in Castle Park we are still really excited to be bringing a box of online delights which can be viewed.

“Some of our regular workshop providers and contributors have really put themselves out to provide some fun viewing on the day.”

The festival has been running since 1995 when a group of early years and childcare practitioners in the area got together and decided to raise the profile of children and families in the Colchester calendar.

It is an annual free to enter event, which aims to provide an inclusive, fun day out for young families and especially for those who might not be able to afford to spend much on activities.

Workshops and activities have something for everyone, including early years play, arts, crafts, games and theatre.

Mrs Miller added: “These have been different times, six months ago we still did not know whether we would be able to meet up in Castle Park, so the decision had to be taken early to keep it online for a second year.”

Those interested should keep tabs on the festival’s Facebook page or text 07530 512464.
