Despite being under lockdown restrictions, violent and sexual offences topped reported crime in March 2021.

According to the most recent police.uk data from Essex Police there were a total of 1,858 crimes reported in Colchester during March 2021.

Of these 695 violent or sexual offences and 513 were anti social behaviour crimes.

There were also 58 vehicle crimes, 91 drug offences and 42 burglary offences.

Police also recorded 131 incidents of criminal damage and 40 shoplifting crimes.

A year since the first national lockdown, England was back under lockdown restrictions again this March as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

It comes as records show crime has fallen over the last year in Colchester.

Essex Police recorded 17,219 offences in Colchester in the 12 months to December, according to the Office for National Statistics.

That was a decrease of 9% compared to the previous year, when there were 18,898.

At 88 crimes per 1,000 people, that was higher than the rate across England and Wales, which stood at 81.
