RETIRING care home manager Pauline Thornton has reflected on her “incredible journey” after half a century of healthcare work.

The 67-year-old has spent the last decade working at Colonia Court Bupa Care Home, in Colchester, where she started in 2011.

Pauline trained as a nurse at London’s Harefield and Mount Vernon Hospital, in 1971.

She then ran a care home in Clacton for 17 years, alongside husband, Martin.

In 2000, Pauline went on to work as a home manager at Carnarvon Care Home, Clacton, for two years, before becoming a home manager at Colonia Court.

“You don’t realise at the time how every single person you interact with influences you until you look back,” said Pauline.

“I’ve worked with some amazing people in my nursing career and they’ve inspired me to not always accept how it is, but to look beyond to see what’s possible.

“They’ve always been determined to make life better for the people they’re caring for and it’s been an honour to work alongside them.

“From my first day at Colonia Court, I’ve always been impressed with the high standards set and the genuine desire to make a difference.

“I’ve always enjoyed and been motivated by providing support and encouragement, not only to residents but also the teams I’ve worked with.

“I’m truly going to miss everyone at Colonia Court. It’s been an incredible journey.

“We’ve achieved so much together and I’m sure the team will go on to achieve great things beyond my retirement.

“For me, though this chapter has closed, I’m really looking forward to what lies ahead.”

Pauline has recently moved into a Grade II-listed cottage in St Osyth.

She says it will provide a perfect setting to pursue her passions outside of nursing, including gardening, painting and restoring vintage furniture.

Her move and retirement will also mean she is closer to grandchildren Jamie and Kimberley.

Reflecting on her biggest achievements and fondest memories, Pauline added: “No achievements were just down to me, but the team at Colonia Court were awarded the Gold Standard Framework for end-of-life care – an area of nursing I’m really passionate about.

“It was a real honour to receive.

“It’s a privilege to look after someone who’s approaching the end of their life and to be trusted by and work with the families involved to make sure we’re fulfilling the wishes of their loved one.”

Colonia Court Bupa Care Home welcomes residents over the age of 18 with a variety of needs, from nursing, residential or dementia care, including those living with Huntington’s.

It can also offer a space for people to rest, relax and recover with short stays.
