CAMPAIGNERS are celebrating after plans for 56 homes to be built on Mersea Island were rejected.
BlueSquare Homes' bid to create the new estate on land off East Road, West Mersea, have been turned down by Colchester Council.
Officers rejected the proposals for eight reasons, including as the site has not been allocated for homes in the Local Plan.
There were also concerned about planning obligations for things like affordable homes and funding for infrastructure.
A new 100 home estate is already set to be built by Mersea Homes, off Dawes Lane.
Whilst City & Country is set to build 100 more homes on land at Brierley Paddocks.

John Akker, a representative of campaign group Stop350, said: "We were very concerned this development was in breach of the existing and emerging Local Plans and was a further development on Mersea which the island's infrastructure cannot cope with.
"We welcome very much the decision because it reflects the grave concerns raised by residents in particular about the highways issues in the area with two major developments already approved at Dawes Lane and Brierley Paddocks."
