For years the centre of many storylines in Emmerdale, the pub’s reopening is generating much excitement.

“It is such an iconic place - it’s probably the most photographed pub in the country and we are very excited to be the new licensees,” said Gavin Patterson, who has taken the reins, supported by partner Lorraine Taylor.

“It is amazing how many people - walkers, cyclists, tourists - stop and take a selfie outside.”

“Local people are really pleased to see it open again - it is the hub of the village, along with the church.”

In a £60,000 refurbishment the Woolpack has been kitted out with new furnishings, lighting and decor, while retaining its recognisable layout and cosy features such as oak beams and open fires. While not able to appreciate this at present, customers will have it to look forward to when pubs fully reopen in May.

“They have done a lovely job,” said Gavin.

As well as displays of brasses and miniatures, for fans of the soap there’s also a decent helping of Emmerdale memorabilia.

“We have heard through the grapevine that quite a few cast members, past and present, are chomping at the bit to come and have a look.”

The sign on the front of the York stone pub is the original from the series. “The pub was called the Commercial and when they were filming they would cover the sign. This is the actual sign used by Yorkshire TV,” said Gavin.

New manager Elise Richards is at the helm. “We are very excited to have reopened, to be slowly getting back to normal and being with other people," she said. "I am a people person and have really missed it.”

Specialising in traditional British pub fare, meals are served at lunchtime and in the evening. "We are getting lots of bookings,” said Elise. “It is home-cooked food and we use a local butcher. We have special boards too, and a menu for smaller meals such as ciabatta for walkers and cyclists.”

Meals are prepared by head chef Craig Davey and assistant chef Qash.

“It is all excellent quality, well-presented food at a good price,” said Gavin. Sunday lunch is expected to be popular. “For food it is probably best to ring and book, but people can take pot luck.”

Some may recognise Gavin as the licensee at his second pub the Craven Heifer, which he has run since September 2018. In addition Gavin has also opened a third, The Ship in Acaster Malbis near York.

“My friends and colleagues think I am either very brave or very stupid taking on two additional pubs during a pandemic but there is sometimes opportunity in adversity.

“Current regulations have been taken into account, so tables are suitably spaced to allow for social distancing. We have just ten tables outside so until May 17 we are restricted”

While not a soap fan himself, Gavin’s late mum Marjorie loved Emmerdale. “My sister said recently that mum would have been so proud.”
