AN entrepreneur has launched his own company with ambitions to become “the Airbnb of everything you own”.

Publican Tom West has founded RentMy and has launched its pilot scheme for his innovative business venture.

The concept gives people a platform to rent out their assets and make money from the things they own, making their items profitable while others also benefit from them.

The 37-year-old from Manningtree explained how the idea came to him while he was away on holiday.

He said: “I was staying near a river and was keen to rent a kayak, but couldn’t find a company who were able to help.

“When walking around I saw plenty of kayaks laying idle in people’s gardens, I thought ‘What if I could rent one of those?’ and thus the idea for RentMy was born.

“It gives users the opportunity to have a much-needed financial boost which is particularly important as we make our way out of lockdown and look forward to getting out and about with our loved ones again.

“Those renting items have the chance not only to save money, but also to try before they buy or to experience a new hobby, such as canoeing or paddle-boarding, but without the initial expensive outlay.

“The additional environmental and social impact will be huge, bringing communities together while reducing carbon emissions.”

He added: “While there are other rental market places, they are either confined by category, such as Airbnb, which is focused on property, and others have faced difficulties with trust and security.

“RentMy’s owner guarantee allows owners to rent their items with confidence, knowing if a problem occurred and it wasn’t able to be resolved between the owner and the renter, RentMy would cover the losses.”

Mr West said the unique business was extremely versatile with no limit on categories making it possible to rent anything, from anyone, anywhere.

Mr West cited some of his favourite listings so far are a portable pizza oven, a crepe maker and a paddleboard.

Listing items is free with a small commission charged on each completed rental.
