WORK on a new £50 million leisure complex is set to start in August after councillors agreed to a new deal with the developer.

Colchester Council’s Cabinet has approved changes to its deal with Turnstones Estates, which is creating the new facility just off the A12 close to the football stadium.

The move paves the way for construction on the new complex, which features a 12-screen cinema to be run by Cineworld as well as seven restaurants and a 90-bed hotel to start this summer.

Theresa Higgins, councillor responsible for commercial services, said Covid had caused a “slippage in timescales” but approving the changes would ensure the scheme got off the ground.

Under the financial agreement the council will retain the freehold of the land and receive rental income.

Leader of the council Mark Cory said: “This site is one which our business backers have stuck with and looked at how it can adapt after Covid.

“We are looking at a way we can invest in this, which has some risk, but has much reward in terms of leisure and entertainment for residents but also economic support into the council’s budget which can be invested in services.”.

The finished scheme will also feature two drive-thru restaurants, a car park a mini-golf centre and bowling alley, both run by The Hollywood Bowl Group, and a climbing facility.

David King, the council’s business boss, said: “It is right to see this as an economic opportunity as well as the fact it is a key component of Northern Gateway development.

“This is a vital component of the wider picture and it will be good for the bottom line which we as a well-run commercial organisation need to make sure comes through.”

The financial details of the agreement remain confidential.

Units are already being marketed to prospective tenants.
