GAZETTE readers have reacted to a bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan and Harry laid bare their lives as a working royal couple, alleging a member of the family – although not the Queen or Duke of Edinburgh – made a racist comment about their unborn son.

More than 11 million viewers watched the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey on ITV on Monday night.

Winfrey was left open-mouthed when the duchess – the first mixed-race member of the modern monarchy – said a fellow royal was worried about how dark their son Archie’s skin tone might be before he was born.

During the candid interview, Meghan suggested her son was not made a prince because of his race – although rules set by George V meant he was not entitled to be one.

She also spoke about having suicidal thoughts but her approaches to the monarchy for help were turned down.

Some where supportive of the couple and called for allegations around racism to be examined while others felt the duchess was just seeking attention.

Caroline Davis said: “No nothing surprises me about the [Royal Family]. [Harry and Meghan] have had a lucky escape.”

Helen Reid added: “Racism needs to be addressed. Bullying needs to be addressed but this was a family feud aired to the entire world. If she wants people to take her seriously this is not the way to do it.”

Others questioned why the couple had decided to air their views publicly.

Rebecca Slater said: “Yes there are probably matters to address with a dated monarch but they are trying to slowly change year old traditions. But it was never going to be easy.

“Kate has had it just as tough from the time they were at college years ago.

“There are ways to go about things and I just feel Harry is stuck in the middle of everyone he loves and shouldn’t have gone public.”

Helen King Ryall said: “I still think Harry is genuine and wants what’s best for his family and doesn’t want history repeating itself. Megan however... manipulating, smug, stirs everything up and then becomes pitiful and wonders why people are opinionated about her.

“She’s trouble and should never of done an interview its disgraceful and disrespectful to the British monarchy.”

David Coleman pointed out: “Anyone else notice that the interview was headed as Meghan and Harry and not Harry and Meghan which tells you who wants to be the headline act and an act is exactly what this Z list actress gave us. Wake up Harry.”

Ashley Richardson was unmoved by the criticisms. He said: “I support the Royal family as much as ever ... America can have Meghan and Harry.”

Gillian Addison spoke about the racist allegation. She said: “I am not white. I probably would say the same thing, I wonder if my baby would be my colour or my husband’s. They have taken it all out of context. Attention seeking she is and dragging Harry with her.”

Ray Martin was clear in his support for the Royal family. He said: “Very disrespectful to the Royal family. As far as am concerned America is welcome to them.”

Stephen Weallsey Wealls added: “Treacherous pair, let them stay in America.”

Mark Duncombe felt the interview had backfired.

He said: “Meghan is a good actress but I’m not keen on the Royal family but I would back them all the way. My concern is she is dragging Harry down with her.”

It is a year on Tuesday since Meghan and Harry made their final official public engagement as senior working royals, attending the Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey.

Buckingham Palace is yet to respond to allegations made in the interview.
