READERS have shared their opinions on how they would revitalise Colchester town centre.

On the Gazette’s Facebook page, we asked readers how they would improve the town centre and high street in Colchester.

Many were in favour of a redesign focussing on pedestrianisation, more independent businesses, and better transport connections.

Craigland Ramsey said a new bus station would be a good start, introducing another park and ride from town to university.

Debby Newman said there were too many fast-food places and not enough ‘decent’ shops.

One commenter, Stephen McHugh, had an idea to ban all transport from the high street, and to look at European cities for inspiration.

Commenter Stephanie Murran wants to bring back the small, alternative shops.

She said: “The blandness of the Town is so boring. In the seventies, Colchester was buzzing and there were so many small, unusual shops, pretty much all gone now.

“The market is useless as well, bring more diversity and unusual things like it used to be.

“You can still have the chains and the food, but just be more original and let the small traders come back in.

Michael Barnett said: “Pedestrianise the high street and run a row of kiosks down each side.

“Offer low rent and no rates with easy terms so small business can start up without huge overheads.

“Also allow the restaurants to have proper patios in front of the restaurants.

“This would allow pedestrians to walk up and down the middle of the road.

“It would also be a great space for weekend events including food and drink festivals, if the kiosks emptied every night.”
