A FORMER international roller hockey player has added her voice to a plea for support to keep Colchester’s Rollerworld afloat.

Faye Wilson, 39, has skated at the venue for 27 years.

Her love of skating, which stemmed from lessons she received at Rollerworld, culminated in her competing for England.

She said: “I started when I was 13, when I was invited to a birthday party and I thought ‘I’ll be the only one who can’t skate’. My dad and I had lessons and it went from there.

“I am planning to have my 40th birthday there, my dad – who is in his 70s – still skates and my five-year-old niece will be going.

“Rollerworld has always been cross-generational.”

She added: “I have skated across the world and there really isn’t anywhere like it. It is the finest rink in Europe.

“The owners are selfless and even during a difficult year have done a huge amount for Colchester food bank.“We take this venue for granted, especially as it is one of the few places a family can enjoy time together regardless of age.

“It offers a range of activities from Quasar, a karaoke room, a bar which overlooks the finest rink in Europe and an extreme sports shop.

“The owners are already making big plans for the future, for example plans to host sporting events such as the roller derby.”

Vouchers are available for purchase, which can serve as a donation while also saving money on future visits.

Rollerworld loses more than £5,000 for every week it remains closed, taking in rent payments and overhead costs.

The popular attraction has spent seven of the months since March 2020 closed to customers.

Owners Jason and Anne Khan say any donations will go towards fixed overheads for the near future including rent, utilities, building upkeep, stock replacement and staff costs not covered by furlough.
