COLCHESTER saw twice as many deaths during the second peak of coronavirus infections compared with the first, new figures show.

Office for National Statistics data shows Colchester has seen 122 Covid deaths since January 2.

This is up 100 per cent from the 61 deaths seen during the first peak of the crisis between March 28 and April 24.

In Tendring there were 74 deaths between March 28 and April 24.

This increased by 209 per cent compared with from January 2 when there have been 229.

Most parts of Essex saw an increase during the latest peak, except Harlow, which has seen the same number of deaths in each.

Epping Forest has seen a decrease according to the figures.

  • Maldon - 21, 64, 204 per cent
  • Braintree - 66, 160, 142 per cent
  • Rochford - 38, 77, 103 per cent
  • Colchester - 61, 122, 100 per cent
  • Southend - 110, 203, 85 per cent
  • Chelmsford - 79, 146, 85 per cent
  • Thurrock - 91, 115, 26 per cent
  • Basildon - 119, 143, 20 per cent
  • Uttlesford - 33, 36, 9 per cent
  • Brentwood - 54, 57, 6 per cent
  • Harlow - 57, 57, 0 per cent
  • Epping Forest - 139, 106, -24 per cent

The data was analysed as part of a MailOnline investigation.

"Of the 56 local authorities where Covid deaths in the second wave were at least double that in the first, 15 were in the South East and 16 were in the East," the publication reported.
