THOUSANDS of properties in Colchester lost electricity on Tuesday night following a power cut.
UK Power Networks has now explained what caused the massive outage, which affected "several thousand" properties in more than 22 postcode areas.
The firm says the power cut was caused by a fault on an underground electricity cable.
It affected properties from in the town centre out towards the Greenstead estate from around 7.40pm.
Engineers were rushed to the scene and managed to get power back on for some customers from 8.20pm, however, electricity was restored in stages.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: "Our engineers worked as quickly and as safely as possible to restore electricity to several thousand properties in Colchester which were affected by a power cut just after 7:40pm on Tuesday.
"All customers had power restored in stages by 8.20pm.
"The cause was a fault on an underground cable.
"We realise how difficult it can be to be without power and apologise for any inconvenience caused."
