A DISABLED teenager died after he slipped from a chair while being helped to shower by his mother, an inquest heard.

Tomos William Iles-Spowart, 13, died in September at Colchester Hospital after suffering a fall.

An inquest held at Chelmsford Coroner’s Court heard Tomos had a history of muscular dystrophy, was looked after by his mother and attended school when he was able.

Coroner’s officer Sarah Lee said: “On the evening of September 24, his mother was assisting him with showering when the shower chair moved and Tomos slid forward off the chair.

“He seemed fine, but later that evening his condition deteriorated and he was taken to the accident and emergency department where he worsened.

“Despite CPR, he was confirmed deceased.”

The inquest yesterday heard police were comfortable there were no suspicious circumstances.

A post-mortem examination was carried out by a doctor at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

The cause of death was recorded as probable fat embolism syndrome, muscular dystrophy and fall from a chair, and steroid use.

Assistant coroner Michelle Brown adjourned the inquest until April 28, calling for some questions to be answered.

She said: “I’m opening the inquest on the death of Tomos William Iles-Spowart, who died on September 24 at Colchester Hospital.

“I’ve had a conversation with coroner’s officer in relation to this and I have asked that a conversation take place between the pathologist and the consultant who was aware of Tomos’ condition.

“I’ve raised some questions I would like if possible to be answered.”

She added: “I want to send the court’s sympathies in respect of all the matters we’ve dealt with today to the family and friends of people who have lost somebody.

“I also send my own personal sympathies to everybody concerned in today’s hearings.”
