Other retailers including the likes of Paperchase and Edinburgh Woollen Mill are also under threat.

So we asked you which big names you would like to see coming to Colchester in the future.

John Lewis proved a popular choice despite bids to bring the brand to the town failing before.

The brand opened its first store in Essex at Chelmsford's Bond Street back in 2016.

At the time Colchester Councils aid although there had been initial talks, John Lewis did not feel Colchester was a viable location for their clientele.

Other big names mentioned include Yours clothing, Bravissimo, Selfridges, Zara and House of Fraser.

Lindy Winship said: "John Lewis but no one is going to commit with the uncertainty of the way the world is for some considerable time!"

Michelle Williamson adde3d: "John Lewis, Disney store, Hamleys toy store, Evans or a Yours. Bring back C and A. No more food shops!"

Sarah Munson said: "Lakeland, Whittards, those sort of stores....if the big stores don't seem to be doing too well how about some of the more niche stores that draw people to an area."

Others questioned if big stores would want to come to town amid the coronavirus uncertainty, while some wanted more independent shops.

Adam Brett said: "Realistically the day of the big department store is coming to an end. I don’t think any big names will want to open a store in Colchester, they’re all closing stores at the moment."

Emma Louise said: "More of the independent shops we used to have. It would also be nice to have pop up shops and markets to support local artists who have shops on Etsy."

Gemma Ann Potticary added: "More independent shops.. Colchester used to have such wonderful little shops."
